Abstract

Endoscopic retrograde cholangiography (ERC) is a useful method for evaluating the biliary system in patients with biliary tract disorders. The gallbladder could not be visualized even after sufficient contrast material was injected to opacify the
extrahepatic ducts densely and to fill the tertiary intrahepatic branches. Failure to opacify the gallbladder or cystic duct during ERC may imply an abnormality in the biliary system, but few studies have emphasized nonvisualization of the
gallbladder
by ERC as a significant clinical finding. This study was designed to establish the diagnostic implications of nonopacified gallbladder at ERC. Four groups of 50 patients had (1) distal biliary lesions (16 cases) (2) primary gallbladder or cystic
duct
lesions (15 cases) (3) proximal biliary lesions (15 cases) and (4) combined lesions: distal biliary lesions and primary gallbladder or cystic duct lesions (14 cases)
We concluded that no mfilling of the gallbladder at ERC is highly predictive of pathology within the biliary tree.
